<dc:title>Islamic Archaeology and the Materiality of the Islamic Past in Qatar</dc:title>
<dc:creator>Carvajal López, José C.</dc:creator>
<dc:description>Despite its long history, Islamic archaeology remains an understudied branch of the discipline, particularly in Arab-Islamic countries. This chapter examines the causes of the present situation by retracing the history of archaeology in the Arab-Islamic region, highlighting the impact of 19th-century European colonialism and Orientalism on its development. The author proposes that as a result of these key influences, Western archaeologists active in Arab-Islamic countries used to follow an agenda that was far removed from the interests and sensibilities of local populations. This part of the research project investigated current perceptions of archaeology in Qatar among different stakeholders, first by reviewing published literature and unpublished reports about archaeology in the country, and subsequently through interviews with professional archaeologists. The author discusses recent calls for a theoretical renewal in the field, in order to give due attention to the interconnections between different parts of the Islamic world and adopt a truly multi-vocal approach. The greater effort towards public engagement in archaeological projects is also highlighted as an emerging trend in Qatar.</dc:description>
